  • Total Time: PT1H
  • Yield: 68 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the Bread Pudding:

  • 6 cups stale sourdough bread, cubed
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Optional: chocolate chips, chopped nuts, or dried fruit

For the Rum Butter Sauce:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup heavy cream
  • 12 vanilla extract for alcohol-free option)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread:
Cube the stale sourdough bread and arrange it in a greased baking dish.
  2. Make the Custard:
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth.
  3. Combine:
Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes to ensure the bread soaks up the liquid.
  4. Bake:
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the bread pudding for 35–45 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
  5. Prepare the Vanilla Butter Sauce:
In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar and cook until dissolved. Add the heavy cream and vanilla extract and let it simmer for 2–3 minutes. Remove from heat.
  6. Serve:
Let the bread pudding cool slightly. Drizzle the warm Rum Butter Sauce over individual servings and enjoy!

Notes

  • For best results, use day-old sourdough bread, as it absorbs the custard without becoming soggy.
  • To customize, try adding cinnamon or nutmeg to the custard for extra warmth.
  • This recipe can be made ahead of time. Assemble the pudding and store it in the fridge for up to 24 hours before baking.
